about

laura stefanidis

I am a physical theatre artist.

Creating & collaborating in theatre performances,

facilitating seminars and workshops,

learning and evolving  with and from inspiring artists.

I was born in Greece and I am currently based in Athens

and Hamburg.

The International School of Theatre Jacques Lecoq in Paris and the

International School of Performing Arts LISPA (nowadays: Arthaus) in Berlin gave me the first form of a moving and expressive body.

Since then I collect my inspirations in dance, mask work, circus,

Shaolin Kung Fu, clown and puppetry.

My work takes theatre as a medium to merge motion, narration

and mythical places into another reality.Various interdisciplinary collaborations in the UK, Germany, Spain and Greece give me the possibility to receive infinite inspiration and to manifest theatre in multiple ways.
Biography

Artistic Practice:

At the core of her work lies the embodiment of microcosms — individual and collective inner worlds, memories, and social realities. She works within the fields of Physical Theatre, dance, and performative transformation, developing a body-based language that moves between character, state, and atmospheric density.Shaped by her training with Jacques Lecoq, her methodology is grounded in observation as the starting point for embodiment: perception leads to physical transformation. She becomes what she observes — not as imitation, but as a precise corporeal translation. The body functions as a performative archive that stores, filters, and recomposes experiences.Mask work, clowning, and object theatre are central tools in her practice. They allow for a displacement of the self and create spaces in which figures, memories, and objects can act autonomously. Through reduction and emotional transparency, an immediate relationship with the audience emerges — a language that remains accessible beyond words. Her continuous work with people in asylum contexts as well as with people with disabilities profoundly shapes her artistic approach. In these encounters, she directly experiences what moves others — and what moves her. These experiences sharpen her awareness of fragility, resilience, and dignity, and flow directly into her artistic practice. She understands her work as a search for a humane and accessible form of expression that transcends barriers and enables connection — regardless of origin, language, or physical condition. Her performances emerge from real encounters and condense into transformative stage landscapes. Currently, she is expanding her practice toward urban research: the body as an archive of a city — its languages, rhythms, textures, tensions, and sensory traces. Through dialogue and site-responsive research, performative compositions of collective experiential spaces take shape.
